On Your Mark, Get Set, Go: Spontaneous Getaways

Couples often need time away, and not just from each other (just kidding), but a full-blown vacation isn’t always practical, possible, or financially feasible. Still, a short sojourn can be just what the Travel Doctor ordered to rekindle your energy, your enthusiasm, and your “relationship”.

Experts suggest thinking “local” and last minute for a refresher course in having fun and being a couple.

· Let Spontaneity rule: Sure it’s good to think and plan ahead or you may find yourself sleeping in the car due to no rooms “at the inn”. Still over thinking and over planning can hinder you from having fun since you’ll feel (and I KNOW “I’m” quite guilty of this one) obligated to stick to a schedule and/or carefully constructed itinerary.

· Lower your expectations: If you expect too much, it’s likely you’ll be disappointed. Instead learn that often times “less is more”. For example, while it may be romantic and spontaneous to jet-set to Paris for a romantic weekend, it’s probably more plausible to set your sights on Martha’s Vineyard or better yet Montauk. And, it won’t take to long to prep or plan; again giving you a “spontaneous” advantage.

· Lighten up: pack light, otherwise you’ll be bogged down with more than you need and that will take away from relaxing and being carefree. Consider bringing just an overnight bag, if it’s just you and the hubby or a small travel bag or suitcase if your trip includes the kids. Bring items that are easy to maintain, refresh, and wash, and that are easy to mix and match, and can transition easily from day to night. Don’t forget the basic hygienic amenities, if fact, your should always have a travel bag complete with personal-size, personal hygiene products, packed and ready to go.

· Soften the surprise: Just so you’re not surprised by a mate who has made other plans or has accepted a work project that means he’ll have to put in extra hours over the weekend, it’s best to feel out the situation and ease your partner into potential plans, without entirely spilling the beans. Once you are confident that the coast is clear, you can spring your surprise on him/her.
