Preclampsia: An often “common” condition in pregnant women that results in swelling and dangerously high blood pressure, affecting 8 percent of pregnancies and marked as the leading cause of early inductions and c-sections.

And, while not entirely “preventable”, there are certain things woman can do to lower their risk.

Pop a “pill”: Taking aspirin can help women at risk for preclampsia reduce their risk by 10 percent. And, it may also help lower the risk of preterm delivery by 10 percent as well.

Aspirin, according to experts is especially beneficial for ladies with high blood pressure, diabetes, or a personal or family history of preclampsia, though it’s not advised for healthy pregnant women.

For those at “risk” experts suggest a daily dose of between 50 mg to 150 mg, to be taken as per your doctor’s instructions and directions and for as long as he or she suggests.

Don’t forget your daily dose of D: Vitamin D is apparently very important for all of us, especially for expectant moms. In fact, studies suggest that women who don’t get enough vitamin D are up to five times at risk for developing preclampsia.

And, believe it or not, vitamin D is extra essential for women with darker skin tones, who typically tend to be the most vitamin D-deficient…..primarily because darker skin requires more sunlight to synthesize this vital vitamin.

Experts recommend between 1,000 and 2,000 IUs daily. In fact, they suggest taking D3 vitamin supplements starting early in your pregnancy, but advise consulting with your doctor first.
