The contract usually states the closing date as "on or about". That means up to 30 days from the specified date in the contract. The actual date is rarely your closing.

you usually don't get a finalized closing date utnil your "cleared to close" and then everyone has to be able to attend, so there is usually a shuffle of dates

was the contract written with a time of the escence clause or the on or about language? If it says on or about, you have 30 days to close, but if it has a time of the escence you might not be able to extend the date. You should contact your lawyer.
